 MATTER: Everything that exists.

  • Natural materials: from plants, animals and minerals (cotton, wood, leather, silk...).
  • Artificial materials: are man-made (glass, plastic, paper...).

EXAMPLES

STATES OF MATTER

  • Solid: own shape / same space.
  • Liquid: shape of container / same space.
  • Gas: shape of container  / as much space as possible.

WATER (H2O): hydogen + oxygen.

  • Odourless.
  • Colourless.
  • Tasteless.


CHANGES OF STATE

  • Gas: over 100ºC. As much space as possible.
  • Liquid: between 1ºC-99ºC. Shape of the container.
  • Solid: below 0ºC. Expands. Has a bigger volume.


MIXTURES: happens when we put two or more substances together.

  • Heterogeneous mixtures: we can see them separately (fruit salad).



Can be separated by FILTRATION.

  • Homogeneous mixtures: the whole mixture looks the same (orange juice).


Can be separated by EVAPORATION.


WASTE: is all the rubbish that we through away.

There are four types of waste:
  • Organic waste: biodegradable, disappears over time.
          (Fish bones, banana skin, eggshells...)
  • Recyclable waste: can be made into new objects.
          (Cans, newspapers, glass...)
  • Non-recyclable waste: can't be made into new objects. Taken to a landfill site. Sometimes pollutes land and water.
           (Nappies, plastic bags...)
  • E-waste: contain toxic substances. Taken to special places to treat them.
           (Mobile phones, computers, televisions...)
