MATTER: Everything that exists.
- Natural materials: from plants, animals and minerals (cotton, wood, leather, silk...).
- Artificial materials: are man-made (glass, plastic, paper...).
STATES OF MATTER
- Solid: own shape / same space.
- Liquid: shape of container / same space.
- Gas: shape of container / as much space as possible.
WATER (H2O): hydogen + oxygen.
- Odourless.
- Colourless.
- Tasteless.
CHANGES OF STATE
- Gas: over 100ºC. As much space as possible.
- Liquid: between 1ºC-99ºC. Shape of the container.
- Solid: below 0ºC. Expands. Has a bigger volume.
MIXTURES: happens when we put two or more substances together.
- Heterogeneous mixtures: we can see them separately (fruit salad).
Can be separated by FILTRATION.
- Homogeneous mixtures: the whole mixture looks the same (orange juice).
Can be separated by EVAPORATION.
WASTE: is all the rubbish that we through away.
There are four types of waste:
- Organic waste: biodegradable, disappears over time.
(Fish bones, banana skin, eggshells...)
- Recyclable waste: can be made into new objects.
(Cans, newspapers, glass...)
- Non-recyclable waste: can't be made into new objects. Taken to a landfill site. Sometimes pollutes land and water.
(Nappies, plastic bags...)
- E-waste: contain toxic substances. Taken to special places to treat them.
(Mobile phones, computers, televisions...)
